Windows on Arm in 2026: is a Snapdragon laptop finally safe to buy?

For years the honest answer was “only if you know exactly what you run.” New silicon and a much-improved emulation layer have changed that — here is what actually works now, sourced, and honest about what still does not.

The short version

Windows laptops built on Arm chips — rather than the x86 processors from Intel and AMD that ran Windows for four decades — used to come with a large asterisk: superb battery life, but a real chance that some app you needed would run slowly or not at all. In 2026 that asterisk has shrunk to a footnote. Two things changed it: Qualcomm’s second-generation Snapdragon X2 silicon, and years of steady work on Prism, the built-in translation layer that lets Arm PCs run x86 software.

The upshot: for a mainstream user — browser, email, Office, video calls, streaming, light photo work — an Arm laptop is now simply a good laptop that happens to last a very long time on a charge. For a narrower set of people — competitive gamers, some VPN and security-software users, anyone tied to a niche hardware driver — the caveats still matter. This snapshot sorts out which group you are in.

What changed on the hardware side

On 25 September 2025, at its Snapdragon Summit in Maui, Qualcomm announced its second-generation PC processors, the Snapdragon X2 Elite and X2 Elite Extreme. Qualcomm’s headline claim is up to 75% faster CPU performance than a competing x86 chip at the same power level, alongside “multi-day” battery ambitions. Treat vendor performance figures as marketing until independent testing confirms them — but the direction of travel is real, and the efficiency story for Arm laptops has never been in serious dispute. At CES in January 2026 Qualcomm added a mid-range Snapdragon X2 Plus tier aimed at more affordable, mainstream Copilot+ PCs, with the first X2 machines — Lenovo’s Yoga Slim and IdeaPad Arm models among them — arriving through the first half of 2026.

What changed on the software side — and why it matters more

Fast silicon is only half the story. The reason older Arm laptops frustrated people was software: an app compiled for x86 had to be translated on the fly, and anything the translator did not understand simply failed. What still does not just work

Three honest caveats, because “most things run” is not “everything runs.”

  • Kernel-level drivers and security tools. Some VPN clients, enterprise security agents and specialist peripheral drivers ship only as x86 kernel components and will not load on Arm. This is the most common real-world blocker after anti-cheat.
  • Emulation is not free. An x86 app running through Prism carries a translation overhead — it is generally slower and less power-efficient than the same app compiled natively for Arm. For light apps you will not notice; for sustained heavy workloads it can be the difference between choosing Arm and choosing x86.
  • Niche and legacy software. Old 32-bit utilities, obscure line-of-business tools and hardware with no updated driver remain the classic failure cases. If your livelihood depends on one unusual program, test it before committing.

So — should you buy one?

Snapdragon X2 gives the platform performance to match its battery life, and Prism has quietly absorbed most of the compatibility problem. The remaining friction is specific and knowable: kernel anti-cheat, a handful of drivers and security tools, and the last niche apps. Buy to your actual software list, not to the platform’s reputation from two years ago — check the two or three programs you genuinely cannot live without, and if they clear, an Arm laptop is one of the easiest recommendations in the category.
