The short version
Thunderbolt 5 is a genuine doubling: 80 Gbps in both directions at once, and up to 120 Gbps in one direction when a display needs it. It has existed on paper since September 2023. What has not happened is the part that matters to buyers — it has not become the default port on ordinary laptops.
Intel’s Core Ultra series 3 (“Panther Lake”), the platform that launched at CES 2026 and will carry most premium Windows laptops this year, integrates a Thunderbolt 4 controller. Thunderbolt 5 is available to manufacturers as a separate chip they choose to add and pay for, which is why in practice it turns up on gaming laptops and mobile workstations rather than the thin-and-light most people buy. On the Apple side it is cleaner but narrower: the M5 Pro and M5 Max MacBook Pros have it, the base M5 model does not.
So the honest answer to “should I care?” in August 2026 is: only if you move very large files off a fast external SSD, or drive an unusual number of high-refresh displays down one cable. For everyone else, Thunderbolt 4 and 40 Gbps USB4 remain the sensible buy — and that includes the dock.
What Thunderbolt 5 actually specifies
Intel announced the standard on 12 September 2023, with products expected from 2024. The specification, in Intel’s own numbers:
- 80 Gbps bidirectional — double Thunderbolt 4’s 40 Gbps, in both directions simultaneously.
- Up to 120 Gbps with Bandwidth Boost, an adaptive mode that detects heavy video traffic and reallocates the link to 120 Gbps in one direction and 40 Gbps in the other.
- PCIe Gen 4 tunnelling — double the PCI Express throughput of Thunderbolt 4. This is the number that governs external SSD and external GPU speed, and it matters more than the headline.
- DisplayPort 2.1 and USB4 Version 2.0 underneath.
- PAM-3 signalling, which carries 1.5 bits per clock cycle instead of the single bit of the older NRZ scheme — the trick that makes 80 Gbps possible over copper at all.
- Passive cables up to 1 metre. Beyond that you need an active cable, and active cables cost real money.
Intel’s Thunderbolt technology overview additionally lists up to 240 W charging and dual 8K display support for Thunderbolt 5, against Thunderbolt 4’s 100 W minimum. Note that charging wattage is a property of the power supply and cable as much as the port — a Thunderbolt 5 laptop does not automatically charge at 240 W.
Thunderbolt 5 versus “USB 80Gbps”: the same speed, different guarantees
USB4 Version 2.0 was announced by the USB Implementers Forum in October 2022 and reaches the same 80 Gbps using the same PAM-3 signalling. The difference is not speed, it is what is compulsory.
Thunderbolt 5 is a certification with mandatory minimums: if a port carries the logo, the 80 Gbps, the PCIe tunnelling and the display support are all guaranteed to be there. USB4 v2 is a menu — a manufacturer can implement 80 Gbps and leave out the PCIe bandwidth or the display modes you assumed came with it. Two ports with identical speed claims can behave very differently when you plug in an external GPU.
The USB-IF’s answer to years of naming chaos is to brand by speed: USB 5Gbps, 10Gbps, 20Gbps, 40Gbps and now USB 80Gbps, with certified cables carrying a logo that pairs the speed with a power rating — 80Gbps with 240W, or 80Gbps with 60W. It is a real improvement over “SuperSpeed USB 20Gbps”, and it puts the two numbers you need on the packaging. Usefully, the USB-IF states that USB4 v2 runs at 80 Gbps over existing certified 40 Gbps passive cables as well as new active ones — so the good cable you already own may not need replacing.
Where you can actually buy it, in August 2026
Apple. The MacBook Pro announced on 3 March 2026 and available from 11 March carries three Thunderbolt 5 ports on the M5 Pro and M5 Max configurations; Apple’s technical specifications list them at up to 120 Gbps, with support for up to three external displays on M5 Pro and four on M5 Max. The entry-level M5 14-inch model keeps three Thunderbolt 4 ports at 40 Gbps and two external displays. Apple’s US recommended pricing starts at US$2,199 for the 14-inch M5 Pro and US$3,599 for the 14-inch M5 Max; Australian pricing is higher and should be checked with Apple directly.
Windows. This is where the story stalls. Panther Lake integrates Thunderbolt 4, with Thunderbolt 5 available through a discrete controller — Intel’s Barlow Ridge family, launched in Q3 2024 — that the laptop maker must add to the board. PCWorld made the buyer-facing consequence plain in October 2025: no integrated support means few Thunderbolt 5 laptops, which means little reason to buy a Thunderbolt 5 dock. Where it does appear, it is on premium and gaming machines from the usual names, and it is a line item on a spec sheet rather than a given.
AMD and the mini-PC crowd. USB4 v2 at 80 Gbps has started showing up on Ryzen AI Max systems — Minisforum’s Ryzen AI Max+ 395 mini workstations among them — and AMD’s Ryzen AI Max 400 series (“Gorgon Halo”), announced in May 2026, reaches OEM laptops and workstations from the third quarter of 2026. Remember the caveat above: USB4 v2 at 80 Gbps does not promise everything Thunderbolt 5 promises.
What genuinely gets faster
Three things, and only three.
External storage. This is the clearest win, because Thunderbolt 5 doubles the PCIe budget rather than just the raw link. StorageReview measured an ORICO X50 Thunderbolt 5 portable enclosure at 5,934.9 MB/s read and 5,354.8 MB/s write on a Dell Pro Max 14 in May 2026 — roughly double what a Thunderbolt 4 enclosure tops out at. OWC quotes over 6,000 MB/s for its Envoy Ultra, including an 8 TB model launched in January 2026, though independent testing on a Thunderbolt 5 Mac came in a few hundred megabytes per second short of the claim.
The asterisk is thermal. Once the interface stops being the bottleneck, the NVMe drive inside becomes one: peak numbers are measured in short bursts, and sustained write speeds during a long transfer can fall to a fraction of the headline. If you are copying a 400 GB video project rather than a 4 GB file, judge an enclosure on its sustained rate and its cooling, not its box.
Displays down one cable. Bandwidth Boost exists to feed monitors, and Apple’s three-and-four display support is the visible result. One caution from the dock industry: Plugable — a dock vendor, so read it accordingly — noted in May 2026 that Windows Thunderbolt 5 hosts largely do not implement dynamic Bandwidth Boost, so Apple’s three-displays-on-one-port behaviour should not be assumed on a Windows machine. Meanwhile the monitors that could actually use the full DisplayPort 2.1 UHBR20 link remain scarce: Samsung’s 2026 Odyssey OLED G8 models and a handful of others, not the mainstream.
External graphics. Doubling PCIe Gen 4 bandwidth is the single biggest improvement an eGPU enclosure has had in years. It is still a niche within a niche, and still slower than the same card in a desktop — but it is the one workload where the difference between Thunderbolt 4 and 5 is not marginal.
What does not get faster: your internet connection, your internal SSD, ordinary USB peripherals, charging (unless the whole chain supports it), and the 4K monitor already running happily at 60 Hz.
The dock question, answered plainly
Docks are where people spend money on this standard first and benefit last. PCWorld’s October 2025 comparison put a Thunderbolt 5 dock at around US$300 against a well-regarded Thunderbolt 4 dock at US$185 — roughly a US$100 premium for bandwidth that a Thunderbolt 4 laptop cannot use, and that most 2026 Windows laptops still will not have.
Thunderbolt 5 docks are backwards compatible with Thunderbolt 3, 4 and USB4 hosts, so the money is not wasted forever. But a dock is not a device you buy for a laptop you might own in 2028; buy it for the laptop on your desk. If that laptop has Thunderbolt 4, buy a Thunderbolt 4 dock, spend the difference on the drive, and revisit the question when the port is standard rather than optional.
What to actually do about it

The bottom line
Thunderbolt 5 is a well-designed standard that has spent three years waiting for the industry to make it ordinary. The technology is not in question — the 80 Gbps is real, the PCIe doubling is the most useful part of it, and the storage benchmarks bear it out. What is in question is whether it is on the laptop you are about to buy, and for most Windows buyers in 2026 the answer is still no, because Intel left it off the chip and made it an option.
That makes this a rare, comfortable position for a buyer. There is no penalty for waiting. Thunderbolt 4 does everything a single monitor, a hub and a normal external drive require; the accessories you buy now will work with Thunderbolt 5 later; and by the time the port is standard, the docks and drives will be cheaper than they are today. Spend the money on the machine, not the socket.
